Database anyone?

This isn't any help or anything, so I thought I would post this here.

I was just wondering what everyone thinks of the Firebird database project.

I'm thinking of using it on this big project (a "social" system for colleges) and was wondering if it's up to the task.

Firebird is almost certainly up to the task. It's a great dbms and should be able to handle most things that you can throw at it. I've always considered though (and still do consider) Postgresql to have the edge on Interbase/Firebird and if you can use Postgresql, that's what I'd recommend you go with. You should have no problems with Firebord though. It's well tested and has seems very stable for me.

Are there any books/resources about working with Postgre that you can recommend? I'd love to give it a shot.

If O'Reilly have a book on the subject, I'd recommend it on the basis of their reputation (I haven't read any; I just got in there with the manual and started messing about. Learning By Doing.)

Take a look at www.commandprompt.com/ppbook/ - it's the full book online (and free!). Also, Bruce Momjian's book on Postgresql (try an Amazon search) is also a very good place to start.
