reference number on a form

is there a way for a reference number to be put into a form dynamically. eg if the reference number were to start from X200 ascending (X201, X202, X203 etc). can that be programmed into the php form at all?

also is there a way to call up forms that have been filled in already so more info can be added? can php do that or is that a combination of other softwares?

Both are done the same way... by declaring the value of the form element to be equal to your variable in question:

<?PHP
$variable = "X200";

echo "<input type=\"text\" value=\"".$variable."\" name=\"\"varname\">";

?>

Depending on your specific needs, you would obviously have to do more with code, but from what it sounds like you are asking, I would say yes... it can all be done with PHP.

It might be tricky to increment alphanumerical identifiers.

You should prefer numerical fields for this ... and hide the ID from your users.

As someone said recently on this list: AVOID "speaking" identifiers !!

(Speaking identifiers might even give bad ideas to your users: there is always a temptation to fiddle around with data to find something they normally would not be allowed to find. With non-speaking identifiers, it is much harder to guess what could be behiiind!)
