I have a problem that has been very elusive. A guy who is on another board (Christianrock.net, a phpBB2 board) has been unable to view once he logs in. Since you have to be a member to even post, he can't even view messages.
He said that he could get to the login screen on the site just fine, but after loging in, it runs really slow. Sometimes if he lets it run it can take 10 minutes to load, but 80% ot the time it just times out.
After chatting with him in an IM, we went through some things to try and see what the problem was. Every browser on his machine gives the same kind of time out error (IE/Forefox/Opera). Every machine on his home LAN also times out. We did a 3D Traceroute (to see where his request is going) and it is pretty close to what mine says, at least the last 6 or 7 servers. After a night of looking up the phrase, "connection closed by remote server" (the Opera error message) I could find nothing to help the poor guy.
He tried disconnecting the router and plugging straight in, and it actually worked. But he says trying since then it has failed. This wouldn't work as a solution, since ther are 2 other computers on the LAN.
Thinking it was maybe a router problem, we gave him several suggestions, all of which he tried, with these results:
I've had absolutely no luck. I've tried every single thing I could possibly think of and it's very frustrating. I've done the following:
- Cleared cookies and temp files (did nothing)
- Scanned for viruses and erased spyware (no viruses found and minimal spyware, no affect)
- Tried multiple browsers (same affect)
- Tried all machines on my LAN (same problem)
- Hooked my machine straight to the cable modem (worked once, then didn't work again)
- Reset the router (did nothing)
- Power down the entire network (nothing)
- Other phpBB2 boards (my own work fine for me)
- Other usernames (xxxx made me xxxx, which did the same thing)
Here's some things I could try, but they are a bit extreme:
- Flash my router with new firmware (I'm a bit wary to do this, and from the attempts listed about, it might not even be the router)
- Reformat and reinstall my OS (probably wouldn't do anything)
- Use my giant 4 foot computer for a paperweight (but it won't fit in my
pocket)
- Start the official "Christian Rock" snail mail forums, consisting of written letters (except I would be the only member )
Let me just say exactly what happens. My computer loads up, I go to Internet Explorer. I go to my favs and hit Christianrock.net. It loads fine. I hit Community (I"m set to automatically log in). After about 15 minutes, the page loads, minus the pictures. I can get into some forums and threads after much waiting, and member's sigs and avatar pics show, but none of the forum pics. From here, it's basically useless, I can't post or read PM's.[/quote]
This is where we stand now. Is there anyone that can suggest a solution. We are running out of options, although I did suggest a proxy server, thinking maybe his IP is blocked (although that is probably not the case, since he can actually view it before logging in.) We are all bumfuzzled. HELP!
