Ok I have been trying to learn PHP and now I have some time to do it. First I want to find out what exactly im doing wrong. Right now im just trying to get the header.php and footer.php to work (start small) I put the code in notepad and saved it as header.php and footer.php and the index.php. I know my server is able to handle PHP. I checked it and also my host uses PHP and we basically have everything the same just I have my subfile to do whatever in. I have looked at many tutorials and I think the problem with them is that they assume that people know to do simple things that they do all the time but someone new wouldn't just know.

Next I first used the basic windows FTP but then I downloaded an FTP program that was suppose to allow the chmod command. So I try to use it. Its suppose to be user defined so that could be the problem. FTP surfer is the program. And so It says that the pages are PHP so I try to click on them to get the chmod command to work or pretty much try anything to get the damn thing to chmod. So when it does it says it doesn’t work. Surprise Surprise. This is the error I get on the index page.

Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_INCLUDE in /home/aisho/www/smg/trial/php/index.php on line 4

So what am I missing. What am I doing wrong. Help me. I have a short amount of time to figure this out and if I don’t learn it now I’ll never learn it.

Yeah, one word of wisdom: post the "Stuff", since that's where line 4 is ... 😉

And at what point did "stuff" become a PHP command, exactly? :eek:

well since none of the tutorials I read said you had to put an echo code for a word to show up on a page I just did it as the tutorial said. No need to be a jerk about it.

Man with the other code I just had one error line with that code I have this. More errors than lines of code

Anyway, in re: your new errors ... could it be because your header and footer files have the "php" extension rather than the "html" one ... ??:bemused:

but why would they need a html extention if im calling header.php and footer.php

They don't. They need to be called what they are called. I used "header.html" in my example, and you cut and pasted.

Since you didn't have "header.html", you made PHP complain.

Another "word of wisdom": don't cut and paste code from the forums until you're sure you know what it is supposed to be doing...

And, the best wisdom is found in the [man]handbook[/man].

Um in case you just skipped down to the bottom and didnt read what I wrote the whole point is to find out what Im doing wrong. And to figure this whole thing out. To get the basics down before I go and convert my whole site to PHP. But this place seems to be a waste of my time so ill go look for help else where.

Hrmm...so you didn't get exactly what you wanted the first time around, and the only logical thing to do would be to write off the whole site.

Yeah, you'll make a great programmer. Good luck with that approach.

If your time is so valuable, you had best go to the source.

What it seems you are doing wrong is comparable to trying to become a fighter pilot, but you've never even seen "Top Gun", much less had flight training.

If you want to "figure this thing out", listen to the guys who created the language...

If you want to output to the browser, use [man]echo/man or [man]print/man ...

And, if you want help here, don't be surprised if, when you appear in front of the crowd naked, somebody yells that the Emperor forgot his clothes...

There are hundreds of so called "newbies" here all the time. The waste of time is for the rest of us, who continually answer the same questions over and over because no one will UTSL or RTFM ... :glare:
