character replacement

Howdy All-
I'm trying to figure out an uncomplicated way of converting a string like "domain.com" to "domain_com", reasoning behind it is that mysql won't allow dots in the name of a table, so the conversion has to happen in order for the new table to be created, any advice is greatly appreciated!
