Continuing Sessions

I have seen this done before but have not found anything to show me how to do it, I want to have a message pop up saying that the Session is idle and you will be logged off, and let them continue the session if they want to.

I usually do this with meta redirects. Set a meta tag in the headers to redirect to the warning page after so much time. On the warning page, also put in a meta tag to redirect after a minute(or whatever time you like) to redirect to the logout page.

Isn't there a way to reset the cookie and continue the session.
