Confused about "\n" to " " ????

Hello,

I have a text window where I cut and paste a paragraph of text from Word into; I use the following command to convert to so I can display the paragraph on the screen for a preview:

$newsletter = str_replace("\n", " ", $newsletter); // to store the string

I then store the converted string into my database.

At some point later I retrieve the data so I can e-mail it to my client, I use the following command to replace the with \n:

$newsletter = str_replace(" ", "\n", $newsletter); // to retrieve it.

The problem is, it's double spacing the output. I want the e-mailed output to look like the displayed output, single spaced.

Why is this happening? Any thoughts?

Try replacing with \r\n instead of just \n. It's the Windows standard to use carriage returns as well. [man]nl2br[/man] should also works for your first replacement.

Hello,

I now have:

$newsletter = nl2br ($newsletter); // to store the string

It displays fine with the above.

$newsletter = str_replace(" ", "\r\n", $newsletter); // to retrieve it (I know this statement isn't the best, what's the best way to convert to \n once again?)

This is still double-spaced-up with the following output from e-mail:

nl2br() does not take into account the \r, to my knowledge. So you're probably ending up with \r\n\r, which may look like a double-return.

OK. After reading many news groups and trying many different statements, I've end ed up with this:

Start with a paragraph froma Word doc.

$newsletter = ereg_replace("(\r\n|\n|\r)", " ", $newsletter);

creates the following:

I use the following statement to convert back to \n to display in an e-mail message:

$newsletter = str_replace(" ", "\n", $newsletter); // to retrieve it

Should work but it doesn't, I now get no line breaks. All the lines are crammed together (continuous):
