Script isn't working right

I downloaded a PHP script to use on my website. The instructions aren't very clear but the last step says to run install.php from the browser. I think I did this (I don't exactly know what that means) but I keep getting the error: db select failed. I have no idea what this means, all I know is that a database hasn't been created yet. Any ideas on what the problem could be?

sometimes they tell you to make a Table in the database (you phpMyAdmin or something)

You may have to set the User and Password in the PHP script to be able to log into database?

I think it must be for Unix. It said it would work with all platforms but i guess it doesn't. I wish people would state that BEFORE I download and try to run it.
