Big Challenge with image files

Hi,

I have a big challenge with image files.
I have one folder called ./images/ with 485 photo in jpg format.

here is the challenge.
There is 9 provinces in SA and I have 7 catagories of images.

the photos are named NPHI001.jpg whis is Northern Province, History and photo no 1.

I would like to use a random function to determine max number of images per group and then display the images on the page.

$img = rand(1,$max)

How do i determin $max ?

How do I add the 00 or 0 between NPHI and .jpg to the $img?

Load all the filenames into an array (using the dir commands).
Loop through this array counting which ones match your requirements (strstr("NPHI",$file) sort of thing).
The count is your max...

This would be much better if the filenames were all stored in a database, coz then you could add flags to them...
