Need Coding Explained Please

I need a nice little lesson, explaination, something that will explain to me when to use certain type of coding format.

Example....my earlier post I think i figured out (will mark resolved if it all works).

I need to know basically when to use the == ?

this has been driving me nuts. I tried so many different combinations and then finally pulled down a combination that worked. it turned out to be " if($var1 == $var2) ......

so...when do you double up on the equal sign and what does it signify.
