Problem with & sign?

I have a form that asks the user to enter their businesses name. Now if their name includes a & sign it gets put in the database. However when I click on the businesses name after a query to the database it says no records found, however if I go into the database and remove the "&" sign it works why? How do I fix it?

When a user submits information use [man]eregi_replace[/man] to replace & with the word and
