page tells you to wait whie other loads

I need to have a page that tells you to wait while I send some xmls, receive the response and process it. when the processing is finished and the output begins, I want that page that says to wait to go away. how can I do this?

I -think- that this would be another type of problem to use some kind of a system() call for. This way, you could start another, entirely seperate, PHP page to execute your queries and what not, then send some kind of signal through a database or text file to the page that keeps the user waiting. Need more than that?

Load the "wait" page, then have the wait page load the next page, that does all the work you need done. The "wait" page will be displayed until a new page is ready to be loaded in the browser.

If you have POSTed variables that need to be passed, then save them in session variables so that you can pass them on to the next page as well.

You are talking about doing some sort of system call -- I said nothing of the sort. And I have no idea what you mean by "some kind of signal through a database or text file to the page that keeps the user waiting." That is certainly not what I suggested.

Don't just assume that 1. your answer is the best answer, and 2. just because you provide a solution means that nobody else can suggest one as well.

And there is certainly no reason for you to be so rude. We're all here to help however we can.

Hi Diana - there was a similar question to this a while ago, see if the solution is the sort of thing you need. It's a bit like the wait page after you do a search here.

The actual scripts it's refreshing to just does a write to make sure it isn't getting loaded every second - a concern I had with the meta-refresh.

This is basically exacly what Buzz is saying but not having implemented the variable saving. (Shhhh - if Buzz says stuff he's usually right, but don't tell Zib')

Yeah, Drak, it's very similar to what I said. I think the only difference is that the data is in the database by then. The main point, of course, is that you need your data to remain intact, whether it's in a database, reposted using hidden fields (yuk), using GET variables (big yuk), or session variables.

Very cute. However, you misinterpretted my post. I didn't mean it to be rude, I simply didn't see how it was different from mine, but I suppose that would be my fault for not explaining the process that I had envisioned in it's entirety. My apologies for being less than professional on an inquiry as to the point of your post.

In regards to my apparent arrogance in thinking that my answer is correct, I would like to point out that my answer could be (and as a matter of fact -is-) correct. There are always multiple solutions to a problem, don't ever forget that the point of a community system such as this very one is to poll ideas amongst a number of people instead of just having reaching one's own conclusion. Do not be so quick to attack me simply because I misunderstood your reasoning as much as you may have misunderstood mine. Doing so would make you just as arrogant as I may have been in assuming you were talking about my solution with your post.

It "sounds" like you're being a smarty-pants. I'm not being critical, just suggesting that when you post you be careful of how you say things. Besides, my reaction was not one of arrogance or anger -- just a playful jab. You'll get a lot of that on this board, so get used to it. Just be careful of Elizabeth's LART. She says she doesn't use it any more, but I think she's trying to catch us off-guard. 😉

Incidentally, I think your post was a little confusing. If I misinterpreted it, I was trying to give diana a viable solution. If it was the same as what you said, then just look at it as a clarification; a long-winded "yeah, what he said." 😃

Well then, I'm sorry I didn't find the jab amusing. If that's how most of them are, I'll just have to pretend not to see them. I had fun today answering question after question. I don't perpetrate myself to be an expert of any kind, just want to be helpful. I had hoped the smiley faces would convey that I had a serious misunderstanding, but I suppose that proved useless. No harm done, I'll just keep on touting my answers here and there.

Yeah, I've seen people on this board suddenly say "Why are you taking that attitude with me, I only said..." and then you read the thread and don't even interpret it the way it's been taken in the slightest.

Some days I'm really dyspraxic and can't remember words for ordinary things and my brain fills in, and sometimes I think that might get me in trouble, though normally people laugh... notable examples

"It was her last day, and they gave her leaves." It was flowers, of course!

"I made a note of it in the... page block" Which I meant 'book' by. It's great, just like being a comedy-foreigner in your own show.

For the record, I wasn't trying to imply that your answer was incorrect. I did find it confusing, and as it's worded, I'm not sure how it would work. You seem to be saying that she should load the "wait" page, then somehow (your word, not mine) launch some sort of system call that communicates in some way with the wait page.

I'm not sure that's possible with PHP. It's a server side scripting language. It serves up a page when the client requests one -- in that way, there really isn't any way (I think) to perform parallel tasks. So, she loads the wait page. The wait page then launches a request to the server to do the work she requires, which, when done, will send a new page to the client. As Drakla said, that is similar to what happens when you post a message here at phpbuilder.

If the above is what you meant, cool. I simply didn't understand that. If not, then clarify what you were talking about. Your response to my initial post sounded like you were complaining that I was somehow stepping on your toes.

Anyway, Diana, I apologize for the derailment of your post. I hope your question was answered satisfactorily.
