GD gif support - any news?

since the world wide gif patent expires today (mark this day in your calendar!) i wondered if there are any news floating around whether and when a gif-supporting gd version will be out again? http://www.boutell.com/gd/faq.html doesn't really say anything yet...

I've had gif support for a while. Just install GD separately from here:
http://www.rime.com.au/gd/
The link is called "A Patched Library with GIF support."

And then use the path you used to install the above library when you configure GD.

--with-gd=/path/to/gdWithGifSupport

Works like a charm. Here's the configuration I used if it helps.

IBM still holds a gif patent as well though. No announcments as to whether they'll release it or not...
