You could try playing with session_set_cookie_params which ive had no luck with, or you can construct your own cookie like (after session_start): setcookie(session_name(), session_id(), time() +31536000, "/");

The expiry time on the cookie is a year, BUT the sessions will not last that long.
Because of the Garbage Collection, the sessions will be removed long before the cookie expires. If you have access to the PHP.ini you can change the GC lifetime and probability, if you dont have access then... you are fucked i guess.

24 minutes (1440 seconds). This is set in the php.ini as "session.gc_maxlifetime."

Take a look at [man]PHP Manual: sessions[/man]. Look for session.gc_probability, session.gc_divisor, and session.gc_maxlifetime. They are all settable with [man]ini_set/man.

As far as i know, ini_set will only set variables for the running duration of the script, therefore what your proposing wont work.

If you dont have access to php.ini, then you are best off using cookies or going to the trouble of creating your own session class that utilizes a MySQL database to store the client data.

I have disabled garbage collection, and do my own... but i have access to php.ini

You havent made any effort to find this out for yourself. Its basic stuff, right in the PHP Manual if you READ IT.

You'll want to change "session.gc_maxlifetime = 1440" in the PHP.ini.
1440 is 24 mins
You will want to change it to 8 hours in seconds, so get yourself a goddamn calculator.
