Noob help: using pear to install Tidy

I'm trying to use PEAR to install the Tidy package. It took me a long time to figure out that my pear installation was old, and to find instructions for updating it.

Now I have, and I can see tidy in the list of packages via "pear remote-list".

I try an automatic install:
#pear install tidy
no signature found for package.info(string,string,bool)

So i downleaded the file from pecl.php.net and tried to install that:

pear install tidy-1.1.tgz

I don't understand precisely what is going on here. There's probably another FM I should RT, but honestly I've already spent about 5 hours (I'm not kidding) trying to get this and tidylib installed... I think I need advice from someone wiser...

The system is RH8.0, PHP 4.2; I have to be fairly careful what I change because its a live webserver for a client.

...bump. Apologies; really need help with this. I desperately need to use Tidylib in my PHP scripts to clean up a legacy of poor user-written HTML in a database.

The website has been converted to XHTML 1.0 strict, but must include info from the database regularly, and the poorly formed HTML already in the legacy database is often breaking the pages!

I can install some PEAR libraries (for example, "pear install HTML_Common" worked just fine), but others, including Tidy, generate the error shown in my initial post. I have fixed the first problem described (inability to download a package via PEAR), but once packages are downloaded, either with pear or manually, PEAR cannot install some (including Tidy), reporting the second error shown.
