Making Queries For Search

Hey all,

I am on the verge of making a search script with PHP that will allow users to search records in my MySQL tables sort of like how this forums' search feature works.

What kind of things should I research? What should I look into? I really need this search script to be as powerful as possible while protecting itself from hacks.
