Dynamic menus

Hello everybody,

I'd like to create a dynamic menu which means there should be a possibility to reposition the items of the menu up and down.

The stucture of the MySQL table is going to be something like this

+---------------------------+

'id' is auto_increment and let's say we have deleted some names that's why it isn't ordered.

How is the best way to set the order numbers and change the order (e.g. James to the second and Ann to the third)?

if you want to order them without "rule", meaning: not aplphateically or similar you will have to use a order_no coilum like you already have pasted

i would suggest the following:

• new entries go to the bottom by default, so you...

• lock the table

• retrieve highes order_no value + 1

• insert the entry with the just read order_no +1

• unlock the table

to change a position :

• read id and order_no of entry to change

• read id and order_no of entry above or below (compairng order_no)

• do 2 updates which simply change the order_no values
