Can't get fopen to work

This may end up being a Linux problem, but I'm not entirely sure. I know this script works, but whenever I use fopen, it gives me a permission denied error. I did chmod 777 to the localhost directory, and openbase_dir isn't set, nor is safemode. This web server is on my laptop, as it takes too long uploading and such, so could this be a Linux problem? I don't know where else to look.

Did you chmod -R or just chmod the directory? If it's the latter, the directory is readable, but files inside might not be. Also, 777 may be overkill, as I think just 644 would work.

Well, I set it to 644, but I couldn't access the files when I went to localhost/file.php.
