Item positioning

Hi,

I am trying to do the following:

I have a news page populated with various items of news stored in MySql table: tb_news

Each Item also has a table field: $position and I give a number to each news item and display the results on the news page ordered by $position ascending.

So far so good.

Now I need my content management page (update database for tb_News) to allow me to see all the news items (no problem there), but to be able by clicking on a + or - sign next to the item to move them up or down the ranking order.

For instance, say you have an item with $position=3 and I want to place it one position higher on the page, I would like to click on the little + next to it, and the $position value of this item would change to 2 and it shows on the page too, by now being in position number 2 on the page.

humm.. makes sense?

How do I go about that?

Im not going to code it for you however something along the lines of these 2 sql statements

//depending on how your ordering works this could be to go higher or lower
UPDATE tblname
SET display = (display-1)
WHERE id = '$id'
UPDATE tblname
SET display = (display+1)
WHERE id = '$id'

Id have a few if statements to make sure your not making the ordering go higher/lower then it should. But that is probably a basis of what you will need.

that part I could kind of work it out.

what confuses me is how I can make the + or - sign "active" and when you click on it it then activates the uptade table accordigngly.

I don't understand how this can happen.
