does this forum ever clear your posted threads?

i am a newbie. i have found this forum extremely helpful. im curious if this forum will ever clear my posted threads from my 'subscribed' threads. im concerned because i feel that i may have to reacquaint myself with replies to my old threads...and i fear that in time...this forum might delete these old threads from its records.

I'm not sure, but there are posts from 4 years ago still on here. If you're still having problems by then, I think you'll have more to worry about than your subscriptions. :p

i know man. its just those newbie jitters ...or whatever you might choose to call it. when i start learning something new...and theres lots of info im immersing myself in... it just feels like i want to keep a 'log' or somthing to keep the approach structured and organized...and to me... this tendency to hoard and log all this info im learning makes me feel a bit more secure. i also dont have the greatest memory...so... if i dont use something for a long while...depending on what it is... i might forget...especially intriciacies like syntax and all that.

but... im sure if i keep coding for four years... well... i think ill know what im doing and i wouldnt need it.... but its kind of a neat feeling to look back every once in a while into my logs and see how i progressed and what ive learned... blah blah blah.

but quite honestly ... when i put this post up... i was curious as to whether theyll kill my posts after a few months. i never used forums because ive never realized how useful they were..so i didnt know their standards...standards like how long they keep their posts on record...and an hour ago or so... it didnt occur to me to just check old posts from other people to see how old they god....i get retarded sometimes...

As time goes on, you'll find that you forget a LOT of what you learn. The important thing to learn is where to find the information. To this day, I still have to look up commands in the manual (especially PHP), because I can't remember the order of the parameters, or I forget what value is returned (FALSE? An array?).

PHP makes this even worse by reversing the order of parameters, even among similar functions, or adding an _ in a command name in some places, and not others.

The bottom line is, learn where to look for the info, and you'll be a pro in no time.

You should also keep a snippet library... Over the years, I have gotten so many, I wrote an application to keep a filing system for all of my snippets along with notes about them, so when I refer to them weeks or months later, I will remember my thought process... categorized and all. LOL I know that sounds crazy, but it was better than creating a new file, copying code to it, and saving it off. Besides, I was running out of new ways to incorporate the word "test" into my file names... LOL

Anyhow, keeping the snippet library will help you to not have to remember where and how to find those old threads.

ronjon, if you want to remember things, try answering questions that people post. That'll certinaly jog the memory.

I think a lot of us would be somewhat lost if www.php.net ever went down. I also agree with Rachel; answering questions really helps you lock in everything.

I found that reading threads on even simple questions that have already been resolved let's so you see various ways (and a lot of times simpler ways) of solving problems, as well.

That's why you download the latest CHM (if running Windows)... I almost never go to php.net, because most, if not all, of my answers come from the downloadable CHM version of the manual.

I completely forgot about that. I'm so used to typing "php command" in my address bar (Firefox quicklink) that I rarely see the page to download the CHM. I might go do that now. Thanks for reminding me.

Yeah, if you are developing on Windows, you really can't beat the CHM version of the manual. It includes the user notes as well!

I have it on the VERY CENTER of my desktop! 🙂

Not only that, but when I need help with a command from within UltraEdit, I simply highlight the command and hit Ctrl-Shift-0 (zero), and the help pops up immediately! It's even easier than the downloadable HTML version!

The only (very slightly) annoying thing is that if you are looking for help with a short command name (like "if"), it won't find it. Not a terribly big deal, but a nuisance. Of course, the online help has the same problem.
