Myql license required?

Hi. I have a friend who owns a small company.He wrote a php aplication that uses mysql databases for a business partner . He asked me if he could sell the application to the other company without having to buy a mysql license. Is it legal to sell only the php code?

I'm not 100% sure, but I honestly can't see any reason why not. You definately would not need a MySQL liscence since you're not selling the MySQL database itself. Selling PHP code is perfectly legal, so I would say that you should have no problem selling just the code to the client.

Someone told me that a license is needed if the program requires the buyer to install mysql server.
Is that true?

guess i was wrong...

i did more research on this, and realized that you will need a license if you distribute the software and it is not open-source (or free). if the software uses the mysql database, or could not operate fully without a mysql database, you would need to purchase a license.

Actually this depends on the licence the product will be distributed under. If its not GPL doesnt matter if the product is free or not you will require a license if its GPL free or paid you dont i suggest making sure you understand it carefully

What if the guy who sells the php script specifies that the script should be installed on a web server that has mysql support?

mattvenables; "open source" doesn't mean "free". Something that is open source can still be sold, and closed-source software can be given away for free. Whether the software is open source or free are two separate questions.
