Making links absolute?

I hope this makes sense...but I want a link to be absolute, and not relative to the folder they're in. For example:

I have a line in root/folder1/file.php that wants to call another file in root/folder2/file.php. How do I call that file without writing ../folder2/file.php? I just want to call it as folder2/file.php.

start the path with a /

/folder2/file.ext for example

Now I'm having another problem...when I try and do opendir() with these "absolute" links, it still looks in the folder that it's currently in..anyway to stop this?

To be specific, this is the error that I get:

Warning: opendir(/asdf/averypoint): failed to open dir: No such file or directory in /home/rightsid/public_html/mimesisprime/imagegallery/imagesubmit.php on line 47
/asdf/averypoint directory cannot be opened. Please double check your directory input.

As you can see, the link was "/asdf/averypoint". Now, I assume this is the kind of "absolute" link I'm talking about? But it's still looking for it in the image gallery folder.

The absolute link using the / is used for HREF links, not comonly PHP. When using the / first in a link in PHP it means something different, expecialy on UNIX. Long story short, / means to start looking from the root of the drive, not the HTTP server root. Basicly, the quick fix is to use $SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'] before your "absolute link". Ex:

$fh = opendir($_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'] . '/asdf/averypoint');
