searching through / adding array to table field

well, i'm about to go nuts over here...

I'm trying to do the following (in order)

check a single table field (named 'viewed_vid') for any values...
if NO values, do nothing
if values exist:
pull them into an array
search through array for $vid
if $vid is not in the array, add its value to an array
add that array to 'viewed_vid' field in the table
if $vid is in the array, display "found vid"/

Does this sound complex? For some reason i can't get it going. I tried the following:

//query user table for viewed_vid array
	$viewedVids = array();

$result=$DB_site->query("SELECT viewed_vid FROM `user` WHERE `userid`=$userid");

$viewedVid = explode(" ", $result[viewed_vid]);

//search through array to find $vid
if (in_array($vid, $viewedVids)) {
	echo "you viewed this video";
} else {
	echo "not viewed";
	$viewedVids[] = $vid;
	var_dump($viewedVid, $viewedVids);

foreach($viewedVids as $viewedVid) {
	$viewedVid = implode(',', $viewedVids);

	$DB_site->query("UPDATE user SET viewed_vid='$viewedVid' WHERE userid=$userid");
}

what happens in the above is $vid is added to the 'viewed_vid', but not the whole array! it's not adding it to the array!

I know this sounds silly, but why not just write your sql to search for $vid to begin with?

$result=$DB_site->query("SELECT viewed_vid FROM `user` WHERE `userid`=$userid AND `viewed_vid = $vid");

This way, if there are values, then they are already returned in an array when you fetch the array, with just $vid...

Or am I missing something here?

Yep, you're missing something 'cause I didn't think to explain it all! sorry...

Well, here's the deal. I have a 'user' table, and I just now added a field to it 'viewed_vid', which isn't populated yet.

User will be watching a "video page" wich is parsed based on $vid. At that point i'd like to add that $vid to 'viewed_vid' for that certain user, so when he comes back, he'll see "You already viewed this video". When he goes on to another "video page", the $vid will be added to that same 'viewed_vid' field to keep users video history.

Does that make a bit more sense? I will only work with one user at a time - the user that's currently viewing that video page. 'viewed_vid' will be an array that holds all $vid that the user watched.
