Browser wars restarting?

I wanted to show you guys this article. I found it quite interesting. IE may be in some hot water if what this article is saying is true. And Google may become a very powerful company indeed. Mozilla is likely to become much more popular then.

What are your thoughts?

I think IE needs to step it up and secure their browser and bring it to W3C compliance. You're going to be in hot water when the department of homeland security says the way to secure your web browsing is to use a different browser. But I don't think MS is going to be overthrown anytime soon. The same mentality applies to their operating system. People may know it's buggy and insecure, but it's what they're used to and can't be bothered to change.

With what they were referring to in respect to web apps, if GMail proves to be popular when it gets out of beta, Hotmail could find itself in some hot water. Already e-mail service providers are stepping up their storage capacities. I don't think this is only browser wars...this is a full-fledged web war waiting to start.

Well, gmail is already popular among the geeks, and it's got the features to back it. The capacity alone is great, but anyone whose used these internet mail apps would be partial to the interface as well. Low load times, very clean, easy to use. I'd watch google's stock once that gets out of beta 😃

Making an announcement that Gmail is going to offer 1GB space more than 2 months earlier than its release kinda sucks! coz mail providers like Yahoo! and Hotmail got a good scope for competing... I mean who would like to shift to gMail if their Yahoo is giving 100MB and HOTMAIL 250MB ... I dont think users of this mail providers shift to gmail.. even though they create an account(like me)... moreover gmail's been controversial regarding its subject related ads... http://gmail-is-too-creepy.com/

It's an interesting article and while I'm no fan of them, I do expect that they have alot of plans in the making.

I think it's part of a larger issue that people are coming back around to - choice is good; real competition is good; let's give the underdogs a chance to see what they can do. And they are showing us what is possible...

On a similar tangent I know see people who don't own iPods bitching left and right about how inferior they are, but they don't even own the competitors product either.

No company should be too big and too powerful and I'm crossing my fingers that the masses, not only in the states and Europe, are waking up and gearing to fight back.

Anyways, the browser wars I hope becomes more of a battle about the best products and not about who can force their junk upon people who are less technically knowledgable...

Finally all the little guys are banding together. No one small guy can take on MS, but if all of them work together and work to get the word out that they play nice with each other, it may spall the end of the 300 pound gorillia known as MS.

Google just eslalated the e-mail storage 'arms race' by a factor of 1,000.
Several users of the search engine's Gmail Web-mail service noticed recently that their storage limits had quietly been raised to one million megabytes, or one terabyte. That's eight times the typical capacity of a new high-end PC's hard drive.
The Gmail service is still in testing and it wasn't immediately clear how widely Google will offer the higher storage limit, under what conditions or to which users. Google didn't respond to requests for comment

For some reason, I think that GMail has gone a little bit too far... :queasy:

The problem with IE is that it's hard to write extensions, or things to make IE better. Mozilla is open source and free to tweak to a users needs. It's even good enough for relative idiots to use it. It's so simple to use, and it provides easy-to-understand error messages...(except for c is not a registered protocol...took me a while to figure out what that one was 😃 but that's more my own stupidity)

IE is just not up to the challenge anymore.

It's not only browsers competing; it's websites. Every web company has a splash page as its home page. They want that to be your homepage, or at least they want you to bookmark it. If they can prove that they get more visitors, than they can charge companies more for ads. I fear now that more money is exchanged over the web than through hands.

Although IE isnt up to the challenge its still the most dominant browser of course we will see when Longhorn arrives. I think it things will change quite a lot considering Linux is been in the Media (yes thats correct maybe Mozilla will get in there too 😃)

As a GMAIL fan, I think it's ridiculous to call it creepy. Humans aren't reading my e-mail... what's the big deal? I can delete messages if I want. It's not like I have tons of sensitive information in my e-mail.

Besides, I actually like the ads. They're text ads on the side, so they don't get in the way. But because they are targeted the ads can sometimes be helpful.

The death of Internet Explorer would make me smile. 🙂
