Remember me tickbox with sessions?

Hi,

Just wondering if this is possible. The client wishes to give the users an option to remember them by auto loging them in whenever they visit the site again.

Now, at the moment I am using sessions so they are only logged until they close the browser, any way of extending this so they are kept logged in even if they close the browser and open it up again?

Can I use a combination of cookies and sessions? Or is that a bad idea?

I believe that's how these forums do it; persistent cookies to allow autologins, and as part of the login process the cookies are examing and session variables set up to match what they would be if the user had logged in manually. That way, the same code works for people who log in manually each session and those who choose to store their login details in cookies.
