true monotype font

I need to output monotype font like courier for a project I'm doing. I tried dreamweaver's approach of body{font-family:Courier, "Courier New", mono;} but it's not working. How do netscape and internet explorer not support courier and does anybody have any ideas (and if I could avoid embedding fonts that would be good also). Thanks for the help,

Well, this is not a PHP question, but an HTML/CSS one; but for your information, the word is "monospace", not "monotype".
