Zend is super high end. You can get a version of ioncube for about $300.
this guy's site is not yet complete, but he offers a permanent license for this for only $55...it doesn't require the server alterations.
i had him encrypt a test file for me...it did some cURL, some database stuff, some includes, etc. it worked just fine...and the source looks like GIBBERISH.

My point wasn't so much that it's bad to have a contract or that you should never sue, but rather if you release to mass market, someone could be stealing your code and you'd never know the difference. Code encryption makes it nearly impossible to determine what the hell is going on in your code. The time you might spend decrypting it would probably be better spent writing your own code. If you're a good enough coder to descrypt stuff like this, then you're good enough to make an honest living:
