I am having the error below and cant figure out what the problem is. I have google searched and read almost all posted commentaries and still cant get this to work. Suggestions appreciated.

public $name;
}

Parse error: parse error, expecting T_OLD_FUNCTION' orT_FUNCTION' or T_VAR' or'}'' in /usr/local/4admin/apache/vhosts/forensicxperts.com/httpdocs/eric/eric.php on line 3

See if this fixes it:

<?php
class erico {
    var $name;
}
?>

Unless you declare a class private or protected in PHP (not Java), the members and functions of the class are public. Let me know if the problem persists.

It has no real value in PHP, but it does in Java (among other full blown OOP languages). Depending on where you use the keywords private, public, abstract, and a bunch of others, it limits access to the class itself or the variables and methods (functions) in the class definition. The OO capabilities in PHP are good for a web scripting language (IMHO) and it's worth learning so you can take adavantage of PEAR as you march on in PHP land. It's not on the same level as Java (yet), but maybe it wasn't meant to be at this stage. Hope this helped.

PHP 5 has added support for private and protected member variables.

OK, that was helpful to the extent that it sounded good. Still doesn't make too much sense to me, but I am actually going to be working on some OOP this fall at school. Thanks. As I work on those classes, I will probably bug you ;-)
