Removing New Line Characters

I'm pulling some information from MySQL which was entered in from a form and contains New Lines from a TEXTAREA field. I'm using nl2br() which, according to the function, places a BR tag before the New Lines.

Now I want to strip those New Line characters -- anyone know how off the top of their head?

Well, I knew that much, but I was looking for the actual character to use.... '\n' isn't working.

This function returns a string with whitespace stripped from the end of str. Without the second parameter, rtrim() will strip these characters:

" " (ASCII 32 (0x20)), an ordinary space.

"\t" (ASCII 9 (0x09)), a tab.

"\n" (ASCII 10 (0x0A)), a new line (line feed).

Was I supposed to assume you already knew what to use? Using single quotes around the \n looks for the litera characters \n, using double quotes will have it looks for the newline character.

No, but at the very least you still only answered half of the question. 😉

$long_desc = ereg_replace( "\n", "", $row['description']);

echo $long_desc . strlen($long_desc) . "<P>";

Results in this output:

The string is 28 characters -- there were 4 NL's in there -- so it may not displaying them, but apparently the actual characters are in there and it's wreaking havoc on other pieces of code.

It might be as simple as:

$str = preg_replace("/[\r\n]+/", "<br />", $str);

but what exactly really depends on what exactly are you trying to do.

Yeah, looks like the carriage returns is what was being picked up.
