adding characters into a string

Is there and easy way to add a comma to a string. An example would be to add a comma to a price if it had more than 4 characters.

so it would be
$4000

and if it was greater than five characters
$40,000

Probably an easy script for most of you.

Well, in that case, I'd probably do this:

if(strlen($price) > 4) {
   echo number_format($price);
}
else {
   echo $price;
}

Thanks a lot. I had no idea that existed, I could use that straight away. It doesn't matter to me if its four digits with the comma (ex: 4,000). That works just as good.

I am glad I posted this. I was attempting to break the string and place the comma separately and put it back together.
