Can you detect if the browser has gone back or refresh?

I've looked around all night and searched this forum to see if i could find some help on it.

I'm wondering if i can detect if a user has hit the back or refresh button in the browser. I don't need anything to in depth just the commands name or the vars name.

i've written a app that relys on sessions and if the user is to hit back or refresh it sends part of the app into a tizzy (cause it causes the apps session counter to increase/decrease even if it shouldn't have)

any help or guidance is much appreciated!

set a session variable for last page and then check that before running the increase/decrease code.
