Uploading a directory

I'm trying to find information on how I might go about uploading a directory of images? I have a folder containing photos and another subfolder containing thumbnails. Can anyone point to a resource that addresses this type of file upload challenge? My brain isn't working at the moment and I'm not sure if this can be done. I don't need to do anything with the images themselves other than move them around on the server and store their paths in the DB.

From what I can tell, one would have to zip the directory before hand and have the script unzip and process it on the server... any thoughts?

uploaded it
used system("unzip $file -d $destination")
unlinked the zip file.
