complex record counting :/

I have a table that contains several columns that same the names of ppl who have partisipated in an event.

I would like to add up all the names from all the coloums and see who has been most active.

eg.

| NAME1 | NAME2 | NAME3 |

| BOB | JANE | CLAIRE |

|DAVE | BOB | RICH |

| JANE | DAVE | BOB |

now this might be the table after 3 events, how can i add it up to show that bob has been at all 3, dave and jane atended 2 events, and rich and claire only 1.

Not the greatest design for this type of query, but beyond modifying the database, I'd probably do a query on each name field. Then, in an array, increment each time a name is occured.
