Guys, I am totally new to all this php setup and I have no idea where to start. I have downloaded the installer for windows and have not been able to figure out how to go about things from here. I am planning on one day making my website a php site and I want to do so through the web server itself and not my home computer. What do I do? How do I go about it? I have read a book on all this buut it seemed to base it all on an actual server that one would have at home. Please help...Maybe I could contact one of you one day by phone for some help on how to start, then maybe I can find my way from there. Thanks in advance!
Lost from the start?
Read the install file, it tells you how to set it up with whatever server you have.
I recommend Apache 1.3, which is available at http://httpd.apache.org/.
I also recommend that you don't use the installer, but rather the zip.
But just read the install.txt, and you should be fine.
You can use phptriad which comes with a bundle of PHP,Apache, mysql and phpmyadmin.... and its also free.

Well, I think he might be saying he's curious how to get started without having to run the server himself.
To go about this, you're probably just going to need some minimal virtual hosting. There are literally thousands of companies out there that provide this. Personally I'd recommend liquidweb.com for virtual hosting, their pretty fair and offer good support. Although, their packages could possibly be more than you need for you're site. Just look around, you'll find one.
From there, you should get some pretty detailed instructions on how to go about this. You won't need to install anything unless you'd like to do all the testing locally. The most logical thing to be though, would be to setup some type of program, Dreamweaver does it for example, to upload your files on each save, for debugging and testing. This is all done via FTP, which I'm not sure if you're real familar with. It's not as hard as it all sounds.
Once you get the hosting, just dive right in. First things first, try
<? echo "Hello World."; ?>
Good Luck, if you need any more help don't be afraid to ask. I'm on AIM if you have any real specific questions.
Thanks so much for the responses. I was out for a couple days so sorry for the late reply. Waste of Paint put it best. I actually am very familiar with dreamweaver and ftp. Thats what i have used to load sites before that were plain html. I would prefer to do everything on a server rather than my local computer. I have virtual hosting that supports php and just dont know where to start. What is your aim screen name? Thanks Again Guys!
I got the s/n thanks...
