how far will mysql go?

hi,

i set up a reporting system that will track all kinds of user activity on a website. I thought of the system for a very long time and i cant think of a better way to do it on. now, there have bin a great amount of people using it and when i looked at the report table in my mysql db yesterday i saw that it had created over 2000 records on a very short period. Its working as it should but i never thought that this much people would use it. Lets say a year passes and the maximum key limit (11) is reached... what happens then??

don't know the answer to that question, but maybe if you're afraight of that happening, you might better change your database key's.

Don't use an autoincrement, but use a combination of a date/time field with an integer field that you up yourself and that resets for each 24hrs.

That will require a lot of additional programming, but once programmed will take care of the problem 😉

11¹⁰ is a huge number, you've got sometime to worry about it. but I like the idea of timestamps, though I would mix timestamp with user_ip it's a lot less programming overhead.

Some databases support autoincrement fields with 64 bit ints. On those an autoincrement would be the right answer.

Does mysql support autoinc on bigints?

10,000,000,000 is a big number. If you logged an event a second it would take centuries to reach. You will run out of disk space before you run out of index numbers. Stop worrying, this is a non-problem.

Plus, MySQL can handle bigints for autoincrement, and they go to somewhere int he range of 9.2*10¹⁸

If you run out of those you've been inserting a whole buncha data.

You'd have to insert something like 291,000,000,000 rows each second to fill it in one year. Drop that to only 2,910,000,000 a second to fill it in 100 years.
