why does getimagesize HANG?

i realize there are certain images altho exist can not be read by getimagesize..

for example if you try using getimagesize on
http://www.bubblessoc.net/images/queen-smile.gif

it will just hang and never load. why is that? is there a way to fix that? or make it time out after a certain length of time of trying??

I tested getimagesize on that URL and it worked without any problems.

Which PHP version do you use ?

The phpinfo page doesn't show anything (phpinfo might be disabled on the server).

I had no problems, the server didn't hang, so it might have something to do with how PHP has been compiled (maybe mm,sysvshm,sysvsem or something like that ... would be hard to figure out what exactly is the problem).

I'll search a bit more and see if I can find anything about that.

oh yes. this is the first time i realized there is such a problem. i've been using it on remotely host images for a long time on that server 🙁

// now do the fread and fclose stuff ...

Is sockets.use_system_read set to On or Off in your php.ini ?

i take that back.. i thought yesterday when i tested fopen it was ok. but today it hangs as well. so with this

$res = fopen ("http://www.bubblessoc.net/images/queen-smile.gif", "rb");

just you know my host said it doesn't seem like the problem has anything to do with php but rather:

It appears that it is not a problem with the image or the getimagesize
function, but a problem with the server the domain is hosted on being
inaccessible from this server.

This is the result of a ping from this server:

PING bubblessoc.net (209.51.132.226) from 64.246.52.120 : 56(84) bytes of data.

i don't know why this is happening.. but it apparently does happen sometimes... so is there a way to make getimagesize timeout after a certain time of trying??

Hi,

try to use fsockopen to connect to the server at port 80 with a low timeout value. You know that there are problems if that fails. If the connection to the server is successfull, close the socket with fclose and use getimagesize.

However, it might still happen, that fsockopen succeeds but getimagesize still fails, but it shouldn't happen that often.

Another way is to use fsockopen, get the data with fread on that socket and use e.g. imagecreatefromstring and imagesx/imgesy to get the image size.

There is an example in the user contributed notes in the manual's getimagesize section.
