Best setup for small intranet applications?

Hi guys,

I've been making desktop and intranet applications for quite some time now using PHP/MySQL/APACHE and FLASH.

It's been good.. however, there's always this one thing that concerened me.. the size overhead! Right about now i've got a 70MB overhead on top of my actual application, juz by installing php apache and mysql...

So.. i was wondering.. is this overkill? what's the lightest possible setup of a simple server with database and php support? is apache overkill as well? Or are there "lite" versions of mysql php and apache..

Juz wondering.

Well im not too sure on 70mb my entire web include php/mysql/apache isnt 70mb including webfiles. But then again ive got no flash files.

Bit curious on your setup and what exactly is required. Apache compared to some servers isnt really all that big. But i think its going to come down to what exactly you want to accomplish with the intranet.

There are quite a few lite weight web servers i dont know them and havent exactly used them maybe a google search might help. Also what is the server operating system may help with determining.

As for overkill i doubt it most coporate intranets are 'x' times bigger then 70mb

well, my flash application is just a little over 5 MB.

I know it's rather odd i get a 70MB file size when the installers for Apache, php and mysql are 3,13, and 16 respectively.. weird aint it?

I actually know a lot of liteweight webservers.. i was hoping some can recommend here.

The reason im concerned with sizes are, i also make desktop applications like my medical management for ur family, personal financial organizer, etc..

Where are you getting the idea that 70MB of resources are being consumed?

Are you looking at disk space? Memory consumption?

What platform is running this? On Linux, memory usage reports for httpd can be deceptive, because of the way Linux (very smartly) manages shared memory space for executables and libraries.

im sorry for beeing unclear. i meant Disk Space..

im on windows XP..

Have ya'll tried BadBlue? HTTP server that's only 500KB (installer). is this any good?

Ive never tried it, so that probably doesnt mean much like i said. The webserver you want to use should be determined by what you want the intranet setup like.

If you want to use mod_rewrite your question is answered you'll require apache , i dont think badblue will cater for this being so small.

But if its just basic php,mysql and only needing the webserver for its purpose of serving webpages maybe doing a dummy test to see if it first works, and if you like it.

hmm.. indeed.. alright.. thanks.. will go testing small servers soon.. If any of you guys have "RECOMMENDATIONS", please drop it here. 🙂 Will really appreciate it.

My recommendation is that you invest $60 in a 20-gig hard drive so you don't need to worry about how much disk space is taken up by the web server. :-)
