Configuring the Mail function

I can't get the mail function to work on my server. I have tried every single combination in the php.ini file but still can't get it to work. What do I put in this section of the file:

SMTP = 127.0.0.1 ; for Win32 only
smtp_port = 25
sendmail_from= webmaster@127.0.0.1 ; for Win32 only

I just dont know what to put there, if anyone knows how I can get to work please tell me.

before it will work you need to have a mail server set up to send mail.
try this one out:
http://www.indigostar.com/sendmail.htm since i am guessing you are on windows.

On the site it says that it expires after 30 days, so I do not really want to install a program, and learn how to use it then be forced to pay for it (I am just cheap). Anyways is there a free program out there that can do just that?

if you are using microsoft windows iis as your webserver, or have iis installed, you should be able to configure a mail server from the administration menu in w2k server and 2k3.

On Windows, PHP will use a remote SMTP server if so directed. Use your ISP's relay server.
