Storing LARGE files

Hello.

I'm developing a small web application to store and retrieve images from MySQL. At first I thought about saving them in folders, but because there were so many images, I decided I could have a better control of them doing what I'm doing now.

Anyway, it works fine with files up to 1 mb, but larger files fail to be stored. I was reading that LONGBLOBs can store up to 4 gb, so I don't know what might be the problem.

Any help will be highly appreciated.

What version mysql is it? It may also be a limitation of an older connect lib, or maybe in php's implementation or something.

I don't use MySQL for this kind of thing, so I'm not really sure, just tossing some guesses out there.

Crap, I just remembered that MySQL has a 1 Meg size limit on querys.

PostgreSQL, by the way, has a ~ 1 Gig max field size, and no query limit size. It might be a better fit if you insist on putting your data into the database and not a file system.

I see. That's terrible... I mean, I also were doing it that way so the system would let only valid users access the images.

Do you know if there's another way to do so in file systems?, because if someone who is not a registered user knows the path and name to the images, he/she could download them, right?

Someone told me one that there was a module you could add to control access to folders (mod_auth_mysql, i think) but it works only on Linux, and I have to work in a Win2003 server.

Sure, put the files in a directory outside the document root, then use a simple file that looks up the name of the requested file, and the permissions and all in a database, then use a simple punch through to deliver it
