Get backend OS

Hi all ..
I'm writing an application that will be running both on linux and windows boxes, the problem is that i can't seem to find any good and simple way to determine the underlying operating system,
what is the best way to get to know the OS that the I'm running at in PHP ?

You could try doing a phpinfo(), use output buffering to capture the output, and then parse the output for operating system version information.

Or try $_SERVER['SERVER_SOFTWARE'].

You can also use the predefined PHP constant PHP_OS or the php function php_uname().
