Reward - "Unexpected character in input"

we are using freebsd 5.2 with apache 1.3.31 / php 4.3.7

either the apache or php will randomly change characters in the code
generating errors such as this:
PHP Warning: Unexpected character in input: ' in
/home/veracart/phplib/catalog.inc.php on line 837
PHP Warning: Unexpected character in input: ' (ASCII=8) state=1 in
/home/veracart/phplib/secure.inc.php on line 21

This one i went to that line of code line 53, and there was nothing
wrong at all with the code, then hit refresh
on the browser and the page loaded fine. Just randomly replaced a { with
a ) character....
PHP Parse error: parse error, unexpected '{', expecting ')' in
/home/veracart/includes/local.inc.php on line 53

We have tried different versions of Apache and FreeBSD with no success

Has anyone got these errors and how do you get rid of it???

This sounds vaguely familiar and I copied the code to a new text document and saved with the same name, overwriting the old version and it was then fine.

Saving the old one in my PHP editor hadn't done the trick.

   We have had the problem before that you are referring to, however, it is not the case this time.

2. Reward info: There are 2 components to this reward:
   A. The money award can be delivered through Paypal, check, money order, credit card, etc.
   B. Surprise worth $420

3. Additional info:
   it doesn't matter what code.
   
   it happens on any page.
   
   we THINK it could be a buffer overrun problem with apache.
   
   we restart apache and it doesn't seem to happen as much.
   
   but if we let it go for a few hours then it gets worse.
   if we restart apache every hour.
   it seems to not come up but a few times.
