accessing pages

I am not really new to php but i have been away from it for quite a while and need a refresher really quick. I am designing for a company that has never had a database website before. I installed php4 on the VPS or webserver. I uploaded some test pages to the htdocs folder which is where the site actually resides on the server. When i go to access it via the www it throws a 404 error. i put

www.companyname.com/filename.php

in the adress bar which i thought should work but it didn't and i can't for the life of me remember what i am doing wrong. it almost seems as though the url syntax is wrong or my file is in the wrong place on the server. I wish i could give out information about the company name and the file name but the boss would flip so i am just going to have to ask for as much help as possible. Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

side note: do i need to install phpmyadmin to use php. I think it is just a graphical tool but i could be wrong.

Hi,

the url looks fine. Make sure that the filename is filename.php at all and that you chose the right directory to upload to.

Just for the start create a file called e.g. myinfo.php just
containing

<?PHP
phpinfo();
?>

and try to request that file.

Which editor do you use to create that php files ?

I am just using notepad to get things up and running. somebody sent me an email about having to configure apache. I tried what you said and it still couldn't find the file so i am going to attempt the apache thing but i don't really know what i am doing so i guess we will se what happens.

Hi,

that might sound silly but did you check if notepad saved the files as e.g. filename.php.txt. That files would be visible as filename.php in the explorer if "Hide file extension for known file types" is enabled in the folder options.

Make sure of the basedir of the server (usually htdocs or www), for a wild shot, try accessing the IP address of the website instead of the URL, the URL could be mapped to a sub-driectory...

If you're using a windows machine, give AppServ a try.
