Sorting information by letters?

I was wondering how you can sort information by letters on the top? I heard that this is very easy to do but I still have no idea how to do it.

From what source? An array? SQL? Text File?

Im trying to sort information from a mysql table.

Then you'd use an order by statement in your sql.

SELECT <field>
FROM <table>
ORDER BY <field>

That is not what I meant. I am trying to do the following.

If someone clicks "a" at the top of the script, it will automatically sort by the letter "a"

Not quite clear that: "sort by the letter 'a'" - the letter 'a' is not a comparison test. Do you mean something like what is in the members list, where clicking 'A' gives a list of users with names beginning with 'A'? You'll notice in the 'A', 'B', etc. links there is a bit added to the querystring that tells the server which letter was selected. Then it's Lord Shryku's outline with "WHERE thingy LIKE 'a%'" or "'b%'" or whatever the letter was.
