Htaccess help needed

Heres my htaccess code:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^season$ /season.php
RewriteRule ^season/.* season.php

Instead of just the word season, can a general rule be made for any word such as news, editorials, etc.?

RewriteRule ^file/.* file.php

RewriteRule ^(/+)/?$ $1.php [R]

thanks guys, the 2 solutions work for http://red-web.u24.paddyserver.com/news_story.php/421 but not for http://red-web.u24.paddyserver.com/news_story/421

any ideas?

I tested it on my server and something like

http://red-web.u24.paddyserver.com/news_story/421

gets redirected to
http://red-web.u24.paddyserver.com/news_story.php
