MySQL EXCEPT one value

im trying to show results of a search string but how do I make it not include one special value?

LIKE '$carmake' and model
LIKE '$carmodel' except year ='$caryear'");

  

Okay now to show a example of what im trying to do is the following. If the $caryear is say 2000....I want to pull up ALL the results for this EXCEPT for when $caryear = 2000...does that make sense?

This is for a "Check out other products for other years below" type of thing.

I'd suspect this

SELECT *
  FROM cars
 WHERE make LIKE '$carmake' 
   AND model LIKE '$carmodel' 
   AND year != '$caryear'

But I don't know your table structure.
