Building an E-mail READER

I am wanting to build a site for my users to read e-mail. I've learned how easy it is to SEND mail, a million times, but what about reading it? I'm having some deal of trouble and I don't want to read through a dozen files from sendmail's site nor purchase a book on the subject. Anyone have anything they can suggest?

I have learned about the IMAP stuff, and I think it may work, but does anyone know how to find out the port settings on someone else's mail server? I'm only hosted on a server, I don't actually own my own, and I'm trying to access their sendmail. (turns out its qmail, is there a difference?)

I also have discovered that IMAP isn't designed to handle pop3 servers but will still handle "some" commands. Does that explain my problem? Does anyone know what commands precisely are the exception?

well U can just connect and check standart ports on remote mail server via fsockopen - to check if this port is opened. Or just make user port Field in preferneces, and users will available to set port on their mail server and U will jsut check if it correct through the fsockopen function.
