Command Prompts from PHP

Hey everyone! I'm wondering if I can run command prompts from the internet.

You see, my game (Warfare Incorporated -- for PDAs) runs off of port 22222 on networks.

...and if that port is open, that means someone is hosting a game. if it's off, then they arent.

When my friend over there is hosting on 28.36.74.101 and i type into my command prompt (which is at Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt)

"telnet 28.36.74.101 22222" it gives me stuff like this string:
"(weird characters) GameName: TheJunkyard (weird characters) GameHost: Verdagon (weird characters)"
of course, when they arent hosting it just says "connected failed".

I need to set up a PHP page that tells whether the person is hosting or not. Can I do this?

Yep. Use the [man]exec[/man]ecution functions.

How do I get rid of this? I googled it and it said something about disabling safe_mode, so i tried:

$safe_mode = "1";
?>

but it still does not work. What am i doing wrong?

Look up fsockopen() in the manual.

fsockopen isnt working for me either... here's my code:

	$fp = fsockopen( "69.160.146.103", 22222, $errno, $errstr, 10);
	if (!$fp)
	{
		echo "$errstr ($errno)<br />\n";
	}
	else	
	{
		echo "YEAH!!!";
	}
?>

and it gives me this error:
Warning: fsockopen(): unable to connect to 69.160.146.103:22222 in /home/verdagon/public_html/wi3/ip.php on line 3
Connection timed out (110)

I tried running "telnet 69.160.146.103 22222" in the command prompt at the same time i ran this php, the command prompt worked. PHP gave me the error....

Is there any other way?

When it shows that message means server is offline. ( ithink )

hm... i dont think thats the case because the command prompt got the information just fine.

Hmm..I would suggest checking if the server is blocking the signal but I don't think thats the problem. It worked for me perfectly when I typed in a domain tho..

This means that whoever's administering your host has cut off access to the function (for, as it says, "security reasons"). Chances are they've limited functionality in other ways as well; perhaps you should ask them what they will or won't allow.

Okay I sent an email to influxhost.net (my hosts) and they said that none of the fsock() functions are blocked.

So now im totally lost. If fsockopen() isnt being blocked, why isnt it working? why do i keep getting the

Please help me! I have nowhere else to turn!

There's a huge difference between socket connections and telnet connections. You should be finding out why the execution functions, like exec and shell_exec are blocked, because they are what you'll need.
