please wait... page

Hey,

Ive been on a few sites, for example, holiday booking websites. When you click the "search" button, a new page appears saying "please wait... checking holidays" with an animated logo or something...... then the page is delivered with the results.

how is this done? I have a database which is very large, and would like to use this sort of page....

any one got any ideas?

maybe you could have it where on this 'loading' page you select the results and store them in a $_SESSION then redirect the user through java or meta tags and load the relevant data on the next page

It's similar to sessions, although not implemented in exactly the same way. When you start the search, you get a unique ID that corresponds with a potential set of results. The submission redirects you to an interstitial page that reloads itself repeatedly. On each reload it checks to see if the result data is available, and if so, it redirects to the data-display page.

Essentially the client is polling the server until the process is completed.

Go with the session! Here's a working solution in a very minor way that I did to this problem a few months back. It seems to be a recurring theme
