Strange delay in mysql connect

I have used both PHP4 and 5 to connect to a mysql server on another computer. I notice there is 1-2 seconds in delay before connection is complete. After that the sql runs fast. The computers are connected in a 100mbit lan. When telnet:ing to port 3306 the connection is instant. Pinging is below 1 ms.

I do not use mysqli_connect. I use the ordinary connect.

Are you using an IP or a hostname? If you're using a hostname, it is probably resolving it.

The problem disappeared when downgrading to 4.0.20a-nt. Seems to be some problems with the new mysql protocols - but I'm not an expert on that so I shouldn't really comment it =) Anyway, it works better now!
