Two dropdowns - mySQL populated

I know this isn't the first post on this, but my search didn't seem to find the answer I was needing...

I have two drop down boxes. As I'm sure you've seen, I want the second drop down to be populated based on the selection of the first on without having to reload the page, as I know JS can do.

However, the population must come from mySQL, not hard-coded. I can easily get the data for the first drop down, but how can I get the data for the second without reloading...or can I?

Use 2 forms in your page for each drop menu.

1st form loops back to itself.
Place a hidden tag in the form call something like,
name="showmenu"

and make your select field as follows:

<select name="fieldname" size="1" onchange="this.form.submit();">
<option value=\"whatever\">Text</option>
</select>

2nd form

if (isset($showmenu)) {
    echo "<select name=\"fieldname2\" size=\"1\">\n";
    echo "<option value=\"whatever\">Text</option>\n";
    echo "</select>\n";
}
